Network Problems

Not very computer savy...the problem is that a while ago the 2 little
computers in the bottom right of the task bar stopped showing the globe when
I'm connected. If I go to Windows help etc it says I'm not connected. If I
go to "connect to" and check, it says I am connected. Running Windows Vista
Home Premium on dial-up. Sending mail isn't a problem but trying to get on
msn instant msger give a hard time with the IP address. Also I have a few
things on here that will stop working and will send the info of for a
solution. I haven't gotten any solutions for anything in quite some time.
Sure hope someone can help.
